William May Author of "Once Upon A Crisis" A Look at Post-Traumatic Stress In Emergency Services From The Inside Out

Author William (Bill) May is a person we'd all love to have as a friend and neighbor.  Serving in Law Enforcement for over 30 years and as the Chief of Police of a small town - Townsend, Massachusetts. Bill was cross-trained in emergency medicine which certainly helped him to serve his community, including saving lives.

"Once Upon A Crisis" is not a book about detailing gruesome stories, although like me you may also feel the deep sadness or be angered by the tragedy Bill has experienced first hand. This book was written to pay honor to all those that were taken too early and by such violence.  It is a tool for those in law enforcement and all the other first responders that witness the worst there is in our world and yet continue to serve.  

Bill takes us behind the scenes and deep into his existence seeing the faces of the fatally wounded, both young and old.

You will hear In my interview with Bill as well as read about it in his book, that there is a pain and memory that never goes away. As Bill says, "no delete button in our brains!"  He has however found a method or way if you like, to remember those victims in more peaceful ways.  He opens his soul to take you deep into his feelings and understand his pain as well as the happiness and love he found by serving others. 

Reading "Once Upon A Crisis" is another tool to to help those like Bill move forward after being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress. He expresses his concerns for those who try to "deal with it" on their own and encourages the reader to seek help.  While speaking with Bill he made it clear that at any time the memorise can and will haunt you or even cripple you.

 It was once more my pleasure to speak with Allen Morris - aka Ace Abbott.  His latest book; "Dead Tired Pilot Fatigue-Aviation's Insidious Killer" takes you behind the scenes into the life of today's pilots.  Often over worked, over tired and under paid for their work in transporting us safely around the world!  Ace engages the reader with the facts about the often hidden information on pilot fatigue which has lead to many pilot and s death.  Why the FAA'S disregard for the safety and well-being of cargo pilots  by exempting them from the long-awaited revised rest and duty time rules and what the reason may be for the Government not passing laws and regulations, "The Bottom Line!"   Ace completes his research and book with important educational material related to sleep deprivation and how it almost cost him his life at the time this book was being published!  My personal hope for those of you who pick up a copy of "Dead Tired..." is to save even one life!  As Ace says, " Please fasten your seat belt and remain alert!"

Evelyn Cole Author of "Hurricane Love"

With Hurricane Sandy hitting the East Coast and even in our area this is interesting timing for a book about the relationships formed during a hurricane!  As I told Evelyn in our "Turn of the Page" interview, " you think you are reading a novel with many twists and turns, but you end up feeling as though you need to be sure your own affairs are in order. 'Hurricane Love' is full of romance, intrigue and a look into the judicial system.  Whatever your feelings about assisted suicide, I think Evelyn challenges all of us on a deep level. Jeff Kass Author of "Columbine A True Crime Story"

Few ever get the "real story" regarding such tragedies as the one that took place at Columbine High School in April of 1999.  Even less stay on the story as reporter and author, Jeff Kass has done and continues to do.  In his book, "Columbine A True Crime Story" Jeff helps us to understand how the minds of the two killers; Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold methodically planned and carried out a horrific crime.  They murdered twelve classmates and one teacher at their high school. Both of these young men have a connection to Ohio and in our area.  This book will challenge you to try and understand how two bright young men from good familes came to be such villians.  As parents you can not help but open you hearts and minds to all the victims of this tragedy.  "Columbine..." is a book that will haunt each of us, but hopefully help us to also become more aware of the fact it could happen anywhere...

Please say a prayer for the thirteen innocent victims that died in vain that horrible day and for their families who have suffered such a great loss.  Jeff has listed them in the order of who were shot first.

Daniel Smith Author of "Monkey Mind - A Memoir of Anxiety"

Today I learned a great bit about a subject that I found I was totally clueless about...Anxiety.  After reading Daniel's Smith newest book "Monkey Mind" I felt a deep respect for those who live with and often struggle severely through anxiety.  I thought all of us experienced anxiety at one time or another in our lives, like the butterflies we feel before being in front of a crowd.  But, what I learned is there is no comparison between that occasional discomfort and that of the “painful internal discomfort” that those with anxiety such as Daniel himself experience.  Daniel shares openly and holds back nothing both in his book and in our conversation.  I think you, the listener will be surprised and informed as I was after speaking with Daniel. Speaking with Author Gary Stokes was like speaking with a sage. His wisdom and his apparent gratitude for life help you to understand we are never victims and can become Warriors in our own lives!  His book “Poise A Warrior’s Guide” is an important resource to have on hand and remind us just how precious each and every moment is, the importance of living in a state of joy and a life of “Poise.”  Often this revelation doesn’t come into our consciousness until we are fighting for our lives or are deep into the sadness of losing a loved one.

 

Gary explains through his “Elements of Poise” how we can make a commitment to our own awareness; hear our own calling and the new callings as they emerge. Living through “Poise” is being able to access your love and have personal power.  “Poise A Warrior’s Guide” gives us the information and tools to become and live in a self-possessed, self-controlled, awake and balanced life full of joy.  It is a book that you will want to keep close by to read and re-read often!  

Akinya Khalfani - "The Split: An Assessment of the African-American Group Identity"

I had the great opportunity to speak with Author Akinya Khalfani for my “Turn of the Page” show and in doing so feel as though my eyes and heart have been opened more than they were yesterday.  His book “The Split An Assessment of the African-American Group Identity” takes the reader deep into the souls of the group.  Akinya acknowledged as an industry leader is truly a leader in life.  He founded Central Place Planning Professionals, LLC which is an urban planning and design firm in Detroit and by the looks of his book (the cover) an artist as well!  

I found this amazing book to be educational, provocative and an honest look at our societal issues of the past and present world.  The chapter on The African-American Consumer helps one to see the perpetual portrayal of being less than and therefore leading to immature spending habits.  “The Split…”  is not a Black verses White but an understanding of from where we all came, the roles we played, the responsibility to one another and most of all to our selves and our own “groups.”  I encourage you to pick up a copy not only to read, but learn from it as I fell I have and will continue to do so.

   I must admit I certainly felt way out of my league speaking with Author Miko Peled.  I will be the first to say I know very little about the war(s) in the Middle East but my heart aches for all.  Miko's book "The General's Son..." is a history lesson and a look into the Israel/Palestine issues of yesterday and today. Miko who's father a revered General in the IDF , his Grandfather Dr. Avraham Katnelson, a Zionist leader and signer of Israel's Declaration of Independence is a peace activist who speaks openly about the myths he says are being sold to Americans. His journey and that of his family is a story we all need to know about, respect and use in our quest to become better beings. In this world of violence and lack of tolerance you will find this book very insightful and moving.
